Skaftárhreppur is a municipality in South Iceland that encompasses almost 6,943 square kilometres in the Southern Region, according to official figures. This rural district stretches across territory that was formerly made up of five smaller administrative units, which merged in 1990 to form Skaftárhreppur (the Icelandic word for a municipality is “hreppur”).
A landscape marked by volcanic history
The geography of Skaftárhreppur is dominated by natural features that have shaped both its environment and the lives of its inhabitants. Extensive lava fields, among the most wide-ranging in Iceland, trace their origins to major volcanic events. The massive Eldgjá eruption in the 10th century and the eruption at Lakagígar (the Laki craters) in the 18th century both left a mark on the land. Skaftárhreppur is also part of the Katla UNESCO Global Geopark, with well-known sites such as Laki, Eldgjá, and Langisjór located within the western area of Vatnajökull National Park nearby.

Kirkjubæjarklaustur: the municipality’s hub
The main settlement in Skaftárhreppur is Kirkjubæjarklaustur, situated by the Skaftá river. This town provides access to local natural sites including Systrafoss, Systrastapi, and Stjórnarfoss. Kirkjubæjarklaustur is also home to the Vatnajökull National Park Visitor Centre, and is a point of orientation for visitors to the region.

Agriculture and community
Agriculture is a central part of Skaftárhreppur’s character, reflecting its rural nature and ties to traditional Icelandic livelihoods. The district’s population has seen modest changes according to official statistics: from 593 residents in 1998 to 575 in 2001. Community events are part of local life, such as the annual harvest festival, which takes place each October. Kirkjubæjarklaustur often serves as the focal point for these gatherings.
Notable people
Among Skaftárhreppur’s residents, Kristín Larúsdóttir stands out as a champion in tölt, a gait unique to Icelandic horses, and reflects the importance of equestrian culture in the municipality.
