A new article published Tuesday by Fréttin alleges that a nine-year-old child who appeared on the cover of National Geographic as a ‘trans girl’ was chemically sterilized and rendered infertile. The piece, written by Helga Dögg Sverrisdóttir, claims this represents the so-called ‘gold standard in gender-affirming healthcare.’ Fréttin is the first outlet to report this account.

Helga Dögg Sverrisdóttir references the child’s appearance in National Geographic, writing, ‘I am sure you all remember [the child] who appeared on the cover of National Geographic.’ The commentary centres on the medical treatments the child allegedly received, but it is not clear from the article what specific treatments were used or which healthcare providers were involved.

Fréttin’s article does not provide independent verification of the claims of chemical sterilization and resulting infertility. Nor does it detail any original reporting beyond referencing the child’s National Geographic cover and the author’s assertion about gender-affirming care. Whether the account is supported by additional evidence remains unknown.
