A new, fully equipped maternity hospital was formally opened in Makanjira in the Mangochi district of Malawi on Monday. The facility is expected to support maternal and child healthcare in this remote region, according to Fréttatíminn.

The hospital’s opening has been described as a major milestone in the ongoing development cooperation between Iceland and Malawi. The project stands out in recent joint efforts to improve quality of life in the region, Fréttatíminn reported.

Local sources said the new hospital will significantly improve healthcare access for around 155,000 residents of the Makanjira area, located on the eastern shore of Lake Malawi. Prior to the hospital’s opening, access to maternity and healthcare was more limited for those living in this remote district.
