Situated along the bank of the Selá river in the Vopnafjarðarhreppur municipality of East Iceland, Selárdalslaug distinguishes itself both by its picturesque surroundings and its history. The pool is set in a shallow canyon, offering shelter as well as natural beauty. Its environment is often noted as one of its most appealing features.

Selárdalslaug owes its existence to a local youth association known as Einherji, whose members constructed the pool largely through volunteer work during the summer of 1949. Opened to the public in 1950, this community-built landmark has since undergone renovations, with care taken to maintain the cleanliness and orderliness of its site.

Although the pool itself is modest in size, it is complemented by a hot tub and an expansive wooden deck equipped with windbreaks. Facilities include tables and chairs for visitors to enjoy their own refreshments, and the presence of geothermal water, sourced from a nearby spring and added boreholes, ensures a consistently warm bathing temperature.

Accessibility has been a focus, with efforts made over time to accommodate those with mobility challenges. Ramps and handrails, a shower chair, and a lift support inclusivity for all visitors. In its past, Selárdalslaug even hosted group swimming instruction in residential buildings by the pool, contributing to the local social life.
