Authorities in Iceland have issued a strong warning against botox treatments obtained through unconventional routes following reports of severe poisonings in Denmark, according to mbl.is. Last month, six people were admitted to hospital in Denmark with symptoms of severe poisoning after receiving botox treatments, RÚV reported.
The Icelandic Medicines Agency (Lyfjastofnun) cautioned the public not to seek out or undergo botox procedures unless the supply and administration are according to official procedures. The agency noted that offers of botox treatments through unconventional channels are becoming more common, with such treatments being both advertised and offered on the Icelandic market.
Rúna Hauksdóttir Hvannberg, director of Lyfjastofnun, told mbl.is that she does not rule out the possibility that substances from the same actors suspected in the Danish cases could have reached Iceland. She described the situation as “certainly the tip of the iceberg.” (quote translated from Icelandic)
