Coastal states have reached an agreement on the total mackerel quota for 2027, marking a significant development in international fisheries negotiations affecting Iceland and its North Atlantic neighbours. The agreement was first reported by Viðskiptablaðið.
The total quota for mackerel catches in 2027, set through this agreement, follows the scientific advice provided by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), according to Viðskiptablaðið. Setting quotas based on ICES recommendations is seen as an important step for sustainable fisheries management in the region.
While the overall 2027 quota has now been agreed, the allocation of mackerel shares among the respective coastal states will be addressed separately in December. Further negotiations will determine how much of the total each country is allowed to catch.
