Korda, an Icelandic telecom operator, has announced plans for its newest submarine communications cable, to be called AUÐUR. The cable is set to connect Iceland and Scotland with landfalls at Meðalland in southern Iceland, near Kirkjubæjarklaustur, and the Irvine Bay area on the Firth of Clyde, west of Glasgow. The project, first reported by mbl.is, is estimated to cost around 10 billion Icelandic króna.
Landing sites for the cable in both Iceland and Scotland have already been chosen, with seismic and seabed surveys set to begin this summer as Korda prepares for construction. The AUÐUR cable is expected to be operational in late 2029 or early 2030, according to reports by Sunnlenska and mbl.is.
Additionally, Korda is considering the possibility of connecting Iceland to another, as yet unspecified, location. No details have been confirmed about this potential extension, according to mbl.is.
