Framfarafélag Vestfjarða, a regional progress association, has called attention to the potential for the Westfjords to play a greater part in Arctic security, according to Bæjarins besta. Their comments followed a speech by Gylfi Ólafsson, mayor of Ísafjarðarbær and chair of Fjórðungssamband Vestfirðinga, delivered at the Hringborð norðurslóða (Arctic Circle Forum).
Framfarafélag Vestfjarða stated that the Westfjords can contribute more to the evolving security landscape in the Arctic. They argued that this shift in significance means infrastructure requirements in the region should be reassessed. The group reflected Ólafsson’s main point, quoting his statement: “This calls for the Westfjords’ infrastructure needs to be examined in a new context.” According to Bæjarins besta, the speech focused on how these regional considerations relate to the changing environment across the Arctic.
