A serious traffic accident occurred on the Hellisheiði mountain pass in southwest Iceland late tonight, resulting in one person being transported with critical injuries to a hospital emergency department, according to reports first carried by Vísir.
The Icelandic Police (Lögreglan), the national force responsible for law enforcement, were notified of the accident sometime between 22:00 and 22:30. Sources differ on the exact notification time, with some citing around 22:00 and others reporting about 22:30. Magnús Ragnarsson, chief watch officer in the South Iceland police district, confirmed that a seriously injured person had been taken to hospital for examination and care.
Hellisheiði was closed to all traffic in both directions after the collision, causing significant disruption. Responders from both the South Iceland and Capital Region police districts attended the scene. Conditions on the road were described as extremely slippery or icy, which is believed to have contributed to the severity of the incident.
According to local outlet DV, this was one of three accidents in the South Iceland police district this evening. Only one of the incidents resulted in serious injury, as in the Hellisheiði accident.
