Since 2002, the Food and Fun Festival has brought a lively spirit to Reykjavík’s winter, drawing visitors and chefs from around the globe during the off-season months of February and March. Established with the help of Icelandair, the Icelandic Hotel and Gastronomy School, and the City of Reykjavík, the festival was intended to enliven the tourism scene during the colder, quieter time of year.
Originally launched as a competition between local and international chefs, the event has since developed a notable reputation beyond Iceland. Each year, chefs from the United States and across Europe arrive in Reykjavík to collaborate with local restaurants, designing inventive menus for a weeklong competition.
During the festival, Reykjavík’s restaurants fill with visitors keen to explore gourmet dishes at accessible prices. The festive atmosphere helps lighten the late winter days, bringing warmth to the city and its residents. The event’s main focus is to highlight Iceland’s agricultural and seafood products, requiring guest chefs to create dishes exclusively with Icelandic ingredients such as fish, lamb, and dairy, ingredients produced sustainably in Iceland’s natural environment.
The festival not only promotes Icelandic produce but also encourages culinary innovation. Dishes have included creative uses of traditional foods, such as “skyr,” a staple Icelandic dairy product generally served as a dessert, reimagined in savoury sauces by visiting chefs. This cross-cultural exchange provides new perspectives on local ingredients and inspires both chefs and diners alike.
At the end of the week, celebrity chef judges evaluate the culinary creations. Three chefs are selected as finalists to compete for the Food and Fun Chef of the Year title. The event continues to draw international media coverage and is considered a highlight of Reykjavík’s winter calendar, combining the city’s restaurant scene, bustling nightlife, and scenic settings.
