Many residents of Hornafjörður, a municipality in southeast Iceland, were surprised to find very large invoices in their online bank accounts after the introduction of tolling for the new section of the ring road crossing Hornafjarðarfljót, according to RÚV, which first reported the story.
Some residents described being charged multiple times. One driver told mbl.is they saw ten separate charges that added up to 46,620 Icelandic krónur (ISK). Another resident told Vísir that their total charges reached almost half a million krónur, and included invoices for journeys made before the toll was introduced.
The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration, Vegagerðin, admitted that an error had been made in the charging system. A spokesperson for Vegagerðin told RÚV and Vísir, “A mistake has been made and will be corrected” (translated from Icelandic). The agency has stated it will send out corrected invoices next week.
