Aurora Abalone, the only company operating an abalone farm in Iceland, has completed a 1.5 billion króna share issue to fund expansion at its facilities in Grindavík and on the Reykjanes peninsula. The news was first reported by RÚV.

According to the company, the proceeds from the share issue will be used to build capacity for producing 100 tonnes of abalone per year. Aurora Abalone is also known as Sæbýli, RÚV reported.

Abalone is a seafood delicacy that is especially popular in Japanese cuisine. Aurora Abalone’s farm is located in Grindavík, a fishing town on the Reykjanes peninsula in south-west Iceland. The Reykjanes peninsula has experienced repeated volcanic eruptions since 2021, and Grindavík was evacuated in November 2023 due to volcanic activity. The area is also known for the Blue Lagoon and the nearby Keflavík international airport.
