Iceland could face disruptions to its fresh produce exports if it becomes a transit point for international drug smuggling, the director of the security and analysis division at the National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police warned. Karl Steinar Valsson told mbl.is that foreign authorities might be prompted to intensify inspections on all goods from Iceland. This would make it more difficult for fresh products to reach overseas markets swiftly.
Karl Steinar Valsson cautioned that if inspectors abroad found cause to scrutinize every shipment from Iceland, due to concerns about smuggling routes, delays and challenges for exporting Icelandic fresh goods could soon follow. These disruptions could have widespread consequences for Icelandic exporters who depend on swift transportation to maintain quality and fulfil international contracts. mbl.is first reported the warning on Saturday.
