Landowners have begun charging travellers for parking at their restaurant near Gullfoss, a popular waterfall in southwest Iceland. According to Heimildin, tourists have long used the restaurant’s parking lot as an access point to view Gullfoss. The exact amount of the parking charge and how it is being enforced have not been disclosed.

This move follows recent government discussions on new legislation that would introduce infrastructure and nature fees at major sites including Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss. The government has called for consultation on the planned fee system, but specific rules and amounts have yet to be finalised.

Gullfoss is located in the canyon of the Hvítá river in southwest Iceland, between the municipalities of Bláskógabyggð and Hrunamannahreppur. The site is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Iceland and forms part of the well-known Golden Circle route near Reykjavík.
