The weather across Iceland is expected to remain relatively calm today, with most areas experiencing light or calm winds and temperatures ranging from 0 to 7 degrees Celsius. This follows forecasts reported by mbl.is, RÚV and Vísir on Monday.

In the northern regions, rain or sleet is expected during the day, though precipitation should gradually decrease as the day progresses. Meanwhile, the southern part of the country will stay mostly cloudy but largely dry, according to the same sources.

Despite the relatively mild winds, many roads across the country will have winter-like conditions, and travellers are advised to drive with caution, RÚV said.

Later tonight, a deep low-pressure system arriving from the south is expected to begin affecting Iceland, the news outlets reported. Looking ahead to tomorrow, northerly winds will pick up, reaching 5–13 metres per second across the country and strengthening to 13–18 metres per second in the Westfjords and easternmost regions.

Background

Iceland is a Nordic island country in the North Atlantic, situated between Europe and North America. Its weather conditions are closely monitored by the Icelandic Met Office, the national meteorological service and a government agency under the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources.

The Westfjords, mentioned in tomorrow’s forecast, are a remote, mountainous peninsula in north-west Iceland.
