Rescue teams in Iceland’s capital region were called to two unusual emergencies yesterday evening: delivering a newborn baby in an ambulance and rescuing a cat that survived a fall from a nine-storey apartment building. The Reykjavík Capital Area Fire and Rescue Service reported both incidents, according to RÚV and mbl.is.
The newborn arrived in good health, with the fire and rescue service noting the boy was robust and both he and his mother were doing well after the successful birth. This was confirmed in local coverage by mbl.is and RÚV.
In a separate incident, firefighters responded to a call for help from the owner of a cat named Sigurlaug, who had fallen from the ninth floor of an apartment block in the Reykjavík area and landed on a fourth-floor balcony. Nobody was home at the time on the fourth floor to help the cat, so the fire service was contacted to assist.
Despite the dramatic fall, the cat appeared to be suffering only from shock and did not seem to be seriously injured, according to reports in Mannlíf and Vísir. The fire service’s initial post about the cat rescue drew attention from local and national news outlets.
