In the coming days, the construction of Iceland’s new Ölfusá bridge will reach a significant milestone near the town of Selfoss in south Iceland. According to reports from Sunnlenska, preparation is underway to drag the 330-metre-long bridge deck from the east bank of the Ölfusá river to the west bank, marking a crucial phase that advances the project towards completion.
The deck itself weighs about 2,000 tonnes, requiring a highly complex and carefully managed operation. Reports describe the process as intricate, with construction teams moving the massive structure in increments of just 50 centimetres at a time.
The timeline for the transfer varies across sources. RÚV and Sunnlenska state that the work is expected to take about ten days, while Dagskráin (DFS) reports a range of eight to twelve days. Despite the lengthy timeline, the contractor has suggested the bridge may be completed ahead of schedule.
