When the Fontana geothermal spa in Laugarvatn temporarily closed for construction, nearby accommodation providers, restaurants and retailers experienced an immediate decline in business activity, Dagskráin (DFS) reported.

Laugarvatn is a small town and lake in south Iceland, well known for its geothermal springs and as a year-round swimming destination. The town lies within the country’s popular Golden Circle tourist route, which brings a steady stream of visitors to its businesses and services.

The contraction in business affected more than just the staff and operators of Fontana: activity levels in the wider local economy dropped, showing the tight links between tourism attractions and the economic health of rural areas. According to the article, this example reveals the real interests of communities in southern Iceland more clearly than many public speeches about regional policy.

The coverage stressed that drops in tourist numbers are quickly felt throughout the region, rippling through hotels, eateries and local stores, underlining the area’s reliance on a constant visitor flow.
