Olly Brown, newly appointed commander of the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) and a two-star general in the British Army, made his first official trip to Iceland in his new role last week. The visit, first reported by mbl.is, highlights Iceland’s growing significance in regional defence cooperation.

During his visit, General Brown emphasised the critical security role Iceland plays, stating: “Iceland’s importance in western defence cooperation is much greater than its size suggests.” According to mbl.is, this comment reflects the strategic value placed on Iceland by the JEF and its partners.

Background

Iceland is a Nordic island country located in the North Atlantic Ocean, positioned between Europe and North America. While the country is relatively small with a population of roughly 395,000, it is led by a democratically elected government and conducts its affairs in Icelandic, its official language.
