Investment in Icelandic data centres hit a new high in 2026, with approximately ISK 57 billion invested, according to figures reported by mbl.is. This marks the largest annual investment the sector has seen to date.
In total, ISK 167 billion has been invested in Icelandic data centres over the past five years, underlining the rapid development of the industry in recent years. This makes 2026 a landmark year for investment in the sector.
Export revenues from Icelandic data centres and related activities are also projected to set a record this year, expected to reach ISK 72.2 billion. This is the highest export revenue figure ever recorded for the industry, mbl.is reports.
Why it matters
The data centre industry has become an important part of Iceland’s economy. The sector’s growth is reflected in both the scale of investment and the rising export revenues. The Federation of Icelandic Industries (Samtök iðnaðarins) represents companies in the sector and, as part of its wider role, is a member of the Confederation of Icelandic Employers (Samtökum atvinnulífsins).
