The ptarmigan hunting season begins tomorrow, Friday 23 October, across all regions of Iceland, according to reports by mbl.is and RÚV. The open season has prompted growing local interest and an anticipated increase in hunter numbers this year.

This year, hunting will be allowed only from Fridays through Tuesdays in all regions, limiting activity to five days each week. A ban on the sale of ptarmigan remains in force, covering all sales to resellers as well as to other buyers, according to Bæjarins besta.

The end dates for the hunting season vary by region. In the South Iceland region (Suðurland) and Northwest Iceland (Norðvesturland), hunting is permitted until 17 November, as reported by RÚV. Conflicting reports have emerged over the end of the season in the Westfjords, with RÚV stating it lasts until 1 December, while Bæjarins besta reports the season ends on 24 November. The Westfjords, a remote and mountainous region in north-west Iceland, is the country’s least populous administrative area.

The ptarmigan population appears to be thriving this year, with mbl.is reporting a notably healthy stock. Áki Ármann Jónsson told mbl.is that “the population has not been measured larger in years.”
