A plastic surgeon in Iceland says she is now most often performing surgeries to remove excess abdominal skin, a trend she links to weight loss after bariatric surgery and use of weight-management drugs, according to a report by mbl.is.
Thórdís Kjartansdóttir, a plastic surgeon, told mbl.is that demand for these so-called apron skin removal operations has increased. The trend, she says, is related to patients who have lost significant weight, most commonly after bariatric (obesity) operations or through the use of weight-management drugs.
“These apron surgeries are now the operations I perform the most,” Thórdís Kjartansdóttir said, according to mbl.is. She attributes the rise in demand to the popularity of surgical and pharmaceutical weight-loss interventions in Iceland.
