The Court of Appeal (Landsréttur) has published the pretrial detention orders for two defendants tied to what authorities describe as the largest cocaine smuggling case in Iceland’s history. The orders relate to the ongoing investigation into the so-called Straumsvík case, as reported by DV.

In the summer, 106 kilograms of cocaine entered Iceland on board the vessel Koznitza. The ship had travelled from Brazil, arriving at the port of Straumsvík near Hafnarfjörður, according to details reported by DV.

The release of the custody orders marks a key stage in the investigation into cocaine trafficking through the harbour at Straumsvík. It is not yet known how many individuals will ultimately be charged or whether further details will be made public.

Background

The Straumsvík port, near Hafnarfjörður, is home to an aluminium smelter operated by Rio Tinto. Hafnarfjörður is a coastal town in southwest Iceland.
