Uncertainty over 4.6 km Vestfjarðavegur road contract as bids spark questions

Only two bids were received for a new section of Vestfjarðavegur with a 210-metre steel bridge, but sources report conflicting next steps, which could affect travel and regional connectivity. The project covers new road over Djúpafjörður and Gufufjörður in Iceland’s Westfjords.

A new road construction project in Gufudalssveit, Iceland, has hit a snag after only two bids were received for the final stage of the Vestfjarðavegur realignment across Djúpafjörður and Gufufjörður, according to the local outlet Bæjarins besta.

The board of Vestfjarðastofa issued a resolution on 30 September following the opening of bids for the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration (Vegagerðin)’s contract. Bæjarins besta reported the bids had been opened the day before the board’s decision.

The planned works cover the construction of approximately 4.6 kilometres of the main Westfjords road, Vestfjarðavegur, including a 210-metre steel arch bridge over Djúpafjörður. Only two bids were submitted for the contract, Vísir added.

Bæjarins besta indicated that the board would prefer to sign a contract with the lowest bidder, while a separate report from Vísir suggested that the submitted bids had actually been rejected outright and that competitive negotiations were being initiated. Vestfjarðastofa has not disclosed the reasons for the apparent rejection or acceptance of the bids or which course of action will be taken.
