A significant water leak occurred in commercial premises in Mjóddin, Reykjavík, when water discharged unexpectedly from the building’s sprinkler system. The Reykjavík Metropolitan Fire Department (Slökkvilið höfuðborgarsvæðisins) was called to the scene to manage the incident, according to initial reporting by RÚV and further information from Vísir and mbl.is.
Over the last 24 hours, the fire department dispatched pump trucks (dælubílar) seven times, responding not only to the water leak but also to other urgent situations around the capital area. In a Facebook post, the department reported handling 89 ambulance (emergency medical) calls during the same period.
At least three of the callouts involved wind damage (roktjón), as difficult weather conditions led to hazards around Reykjavík. The fire department said they use special ‘storm boxes’ brought to incidents like these, according to a shift leader (varðstjóri).
The fire department noted: “We had to fasten down roof iron and remove one old satellite dish that had begun to come loose and create a hazard,” the agency wrote in a post, as cited by Vísir.
