Tulipop, an imaginative brand from Iceland launched in 2010, stands apart in the world of children’s entertainment. What began as a creative series of plush toys representing natural forms soon evolved into a wide universe spanning animation, collectibles, and global partnerships.

Characters shaped by Icelandic roots and real people

At the heart of Tulipop are its inhabitants, known as Tulipoppers. Each character has a distinctive personality. Gloomy, for example, is a mushroom girl whose adventurous spirit often leads to bold escapades, sometimes roping in her brother Bubble, who prefers calm days filled with blueberry pancakes and books. Fred, a gentle monster who possesses glowing horns and an ever-playful attitude, contrasts with Miss Maddy, a bear with a flair for drama and hidden depths. The world’s wise matriarch, Mama Skully, brings both humour and mischief, and is joined by Mr. Tree, whose tears turn to diamonds and who delights in sharing his wisdom, along with the contents of his ever-growing collection stored in his branches.

Tulipop’s creator, Signý Kolbeinsdóttir, drew from friends and family when designing these personalities, giving each character emotional complexity and quirks. The fantastical island setting of Tulipop echoes the volcanic terrain and folklore of Iceland, where mystery and a hint of darkness often shape stories for children and adults alike.

A global journey from plush figures to animated stories

Tulipop’s world expanded in 2017 with an animated series made available on YouTube, bringing its colourful cast to screens beyond Iceland. International recognition soon followed. Merchandise agreements with companies such as Toynami introduced plush and vinyl versions of Gloomy, Bubble, Fred, and Miss Maddy. New collaborations led to themed accessories, clothing, stationery, bedding, and socks, making the characters accessible to a wider audience.

The brand’s reach now extends into stores across 14 countries, with a large retail presence in both Iceland and abroad. In the United States, partnerships led to Tulipop products appearing in hundreds of stores, and the creation of a vibrant mural in California to celebrate their growing influence. UK retailers, including department stores, have also joined Tulipop’s network.

Since its beginning, Tulipop has received a number of awards and honours. Recognition from business associations and design industry groups highlights both its commercial achievements and creative innovation. These accolades reflect Tulipop’s unique position as a playful, imaginative export from Icelandic culture.
