A coin described as one of the oldest coins minted in Denmark, dating back about one thousand years to the time of King Sweyn Forkbeard, was sold at auction on Tuesday, according to a report from RÚV. It is one of only eight known examples and the only one in private ownership.

The final sale price for the coin was €18,300, which was about 2.5 million Icelandic krónur, making it one of the highest prices paid for such a Danish historical coin. This rare item is one of only eight comparable coins known to exist, and it is the only one currently held in private ownership.

Sweyn Forkbeard, the son of Harald Bluetooth, ruled Denmark around a millennium ago. The auction has drawn attention among collectors due to the nearly unique status of the coin and its historical significance.
