A magnitude 5.2 earthquake was recorded at Bárðarbunga stratovolcano, located under the Vatnajökull ice cap in south-central Iceland, at 14:44 on 19 October 2026. Several aftershocks, most of them under magnitude 2, followed the main event according to initial reports by RÚV, Vísir, and mbl.is, who first covered the story.

Earlier on 19 October, Bárðarbunga had experienced other earthquakes, the largest of which was about magnitude 3.0. RÚV reported no signs of volcanic tremor.

“Now everything is calm for the moment, but today there was a magnitude 5.2 quake in Bárðarbunga and several aftershocks, mostly under 2,” said Ingibjörg Andrea Bergþórsdóttir, a nature-hazard specialist at the Icelandic Met Office, in a statement to mbl.is.
