Anglers in Iceland caught about 46,300 salmon with rods during the summer of 2026, an increase of 35% compared to the previous year, according to preliminary figures from the Marine and Freshwater Research Institute. The news was first reported by RÚV.
The salmon catch this season was not only larger than in 2025, but also surpassed the long-term average. It exceeded the catch from the previous summer by around 12,100 salmon and was roughly 12% higher than the long-term annual average for 1974–2025.
The executive director of the National Association of Fishing Clubs attributed the strong catch largely to wet weather during the fishing season. Details on how weather patterns affected salmon behaviour and river conditions were not provided.
