A new mountain hut for the Iceland Touring Association (Ferðafélag Íslands) was transported into the Langadal area of Þórsmörk today, according to Vísir and other Icelandic news outlets.
The hut, called Skagfjörðsskáli, arrived in six separate modules, as it was too large to move all at once. The heaviest section weighed about 22 tonnes, making the transport operation a significant logistical challenge. The modules, manufactured in Selfoss over recent months, were moved overnight along the route to Þórsmörk; the final, heaviest module arrived earlier today.
The new building was assembled on the foundation of the old Skagfjörðsskáli, preserving its familiar appearance in Langadal. Local people from Selfoss were closely involved in the construction of the hut’s modules. The previous Skagfjörðsskáli, which occupied the site since 1954, was demolished this summer to make way for the updated facility.
