Municipalities on the Suðurnes peninsula in southwestern Iceland have voiced strong opposition to a plan that would abolish the local police commissioner’s independent office and merge it with another police district. The matter was first reported by Icelandic news outlet mbl.is.
Representatives from all four municipalities in Suðurnes argue that this proposed change could weaken the quality of policing, border control and civil protection functions in the region. They describe Suðurnes as one of Iceland’s most important areas for national security.
