A new approach to Icelandic language education is proving effective for people of foreign origin working in Iceland’s nursing homes, according to a report by RÚV today. The initiative, called Málbrú, is tailored specifically for nursing home staff and schedules instruction during working hours, which has shown clear benefits in language learning outcomes.

This targeted programme responds to a significant need: a little over one-third of nursing home employees in Iceland have a mother tongue other than Icelandic. By integrating language classes into the working day, Málbrú aims both to support the professional development of staff and improve communication in care environments.

Málbrú has already demonstrated measurable success in improving participants’ Icelandic language skills, with feedback indicating that the working-hours format makes learning more accessible and effective. RÚV first reported on the programme’s results.
