A limited search operation is taking place today in Grindavík, the fishing town on Iceland’s Reykjanes peninsula that was evacuated in November 2023 because of volcanic activity, according to reporting by Vísir.

There is mourning among municipal employees, Vísir reports. Details about the cause of mourning have not been disclosed.

Kári Sigurðsson, chairman of the Sameykis union, criticised Reykjavík’s city leadership, saying, “I give the Reykjavík majority a failing grade,” according to Vísir. His remarks, translated from Icelandic, refer to recent organisational changes in the city.

Kári Sigurðsson said he expects a similar number of staff to be dismissed today as during the last round of organisational changes in Reykjavík.

Background

Grindavík is a fishing town in the Southern Peninsula district of Iceland, located near Þorbjörn. Its harbour lies on the coast, and most residents work in the fishing industry. The Blue Lagoon, the town’s main attraction, is located about 5 kilometres from Grindavík.
