Iceland’s historic Núpsmýri fish-farm remains active as industry grows

Núpsmýri in Öxarfjörður was once among the largest land-based fish-farming sites but is now small compared to new Icelandic projects, Bændablaðið reports.

One of Iceland’s longest-running land-based fish-farming stations continues to operate at Núpsmýri in the Öxarfjörður region of North-East Iceland, according to reporting by Bændablaðið. The station is currently run by Samherji, an Icelandic company active in the fisheries sector.

The Núpsmýri station was once considered among the largest land-based fish-farming facilities in the world, reflecting Iceland’s early leadership in land-based aquaculture.

Today, the station is regarded as relatively small compared to the ambitious land-based aquaculture projects that are currently under construction in Iceland. An interview discussing the station was published on 19 October 2026 by Bændablaðið.
