Rod-and-line fisheries across Iceland caught about 46,000 salmon this summer, a sharp increase over recent years, according to preliminary figures reported by RÚV and Feykir. The Marine and Freshwater Research Institute (Hafrannsóknarstofnun), which tracks fisheries in Iceland, compiled the initial catch total. The new data come at a time of growing interest in the state of Iceland’s salmon populations.
The total salmon catch was about 35% higher than in summer 2025, amounting to roughly 12,100 more salmon than were landed last year. The summer’s catch was also about 12% above the long-term average for the years 1974 to 2025, highlighting the season as an unusually productive one for Icelandic anglers. Feykir and RÚV were among the first media to report the numbers.
The executive director of the National Association of Fishing Clubs (Landssamband veiðifélaga) said that wet weather played a major role in this year’s strong performance. In particular, rivers in the Húnvetn area saw especially good results for salmon fishing this season.
