Hybrids between blue and fin whales prompt questions about species status

Blue whales remain endangered due to past overfishing, but hybrids with fin whales have been reported. The implications for conservation and taxonomy are now under discussion.

Hybrids between blue whales (known locally as steypireyðir) and fin whales (langreyðir) have been reported, sparking renewed debate about the classification and conservation of these whale species, according to Viðskiptablaðið.

The occurrence of such hybrids is prompting questions about how to define and manage these whale populations. Scientists and policy makers are examining what these findings might mean for existing conservation rules and taxonomy.

Blue whales, the largest animals known, remain endangered as a direct consequence of commercial whaling in past decades. Their population numbers have not recovered, and hybridisation with fin whales introduces further uncertainty into their status.

It is not yet known how common these hybrids are or what geographic regions are most affected. No details have been released on whether changes to species management or conservation status are planned as a result of these findings.
