Hallgrímskirkja, a landmark church in Reykjavík, will mark the 40th anniversary of its consecration on Monday 26 October 2026. mbl.is reported that the church was officially consecrated on 26 October 1986 after over four decades of construction.

Construction of Hallgrímskirkja began in 1945. The project was a major undertaking for Iceland and spanned just over forty years, reflecting the architectural ambition and significance the structure holds in the country’s cultural and religious life. Information about the history of the church’s construction is available on the Church of Iceland’s website, mbl.is reported.

Reykjavík, where Hallgrímskirkja stands, is the capital and largest city of Iceland. Located in the southwest of the country on the Faxaflói bay, the city has served as Iceland’s cultural and governmental centre since its founding as a trading town in 1786.
