A prominent Icelandic politician has criticised former president Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson for appearing to support the Russian foreign minister in public discussions, according to Vísir.
Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir made her remarks during a Sprengisand interview, where she described the existence of ‘Russian sympathizers’ spread widely across Icelandic society. She singled out Ólafur Ragnar, saying it was terrible that he appeared to side with the Russian foreign minister.
Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, in response to the criticism, told mbl.is that he has not declared support for the Russian foreign minister’s views. It is not yet clear what specific statements led to the controversy, as sources differ on their interpretation.
