CERT-IS warns of critical PHP vulnerabilities affecting global servers

Iceland’s CERT-IS has alerted the public to two major security flaws in PHP, the web technology behind a vast majority of the world’s websites. Swift response measures were reported, but experts caution similar threats are likely ahead.

CERT-IS, Iceland’s national computer emergency response team, has issued a warning about two serious security vulnerabilities in the PHP programming language, which underpins most websites worldwide. The alert, first reported by mbl.is, was also covered by RÚV.

Ingólfur Andri Ágústsson, a cybersecurity expert, told mbl.is that the PHP security weakness is tied to the web servers that host more than 70 percent of all websites on the internet.

News outlets including mbl.is reported that responders acted quickly to address the newly identified PHP vulnerabilities. While details of the specific responses were not disclosed, the rapid reaction suggests a high level of concern in the cybersecurity sector.

Another expert, speaking to RÚV, warned that more serious network security flaws like the PHP issue reported this week are likely to emerge in the future. They advised that organisations can prevent major damage by maintaining robust defensive measures and carefully mapping their digital systems.
