Iceland’s Bird Protection Society (Fuglavernd) has urged authorities to find alternatives to shooting geese to address crop damage to cereal fields, according to a new public statement reported by Mannlíf and mbl.is.

Fuglavernd said it takes farmers’ concerns about the destruction caused by geese seriously but argues that non-lethal solutions should be prioritised. The board highlighted the need for professional research, the testing of scaring methods, and increased support for farmers as ways to address the problem without resorting to lethal action.

“Skoða þarf aðrar leiðir en að drepa álftir,” the board of Fuglavernd said in Icelandic, calling for alternatives to killing the birds. The organisation’s public call was reported by Mannlíf, who first covered the story.
