A fierce storm struck Vattarnes in Iceland’s Eastfjords on 6 February 2024, causing significant damage to a local farm, Bændablaðið first reported. Farmers in the area experienced what they described as particularly severe impacts from the extreme weather that day.

According to accounts gathered after the storm, the wind intensified over a small patch of land at Vattarnes. This led to major damage to a residential house and several farm outbuildings.

The roofs of several outbuildings were torn off by the force of the winds, remaining largely intact as they were carried away, Bændablaðið reported. The extent of further damage to other structures has not been specified.

Background

The Eastfjords (Austfirðir) are a region in eastern Iceland, known for their dramatic landscapes and rural farming communities. Major storms are not uncommon in this part of the country, but the degree of damage reported at Vattarnes on this occasion was unusual.
