Víkingar, the Reykjavík-based professional sports club, honoured one of their own at a recent celebration, as player Ingvar received the Iceland shield in front of his teammates and supporters. The event took place at the club’s season-ending celebration, known as Hamingjan. Ingvar had been forced to stop playing earlier this summer after being diagnosed with malignant cancer, according to Vísir, which first reported the story.

Víkingar wrapped up the Icelandic championship several weeks before the season’s final match, securing their second consecutive title. The club’s final match ended in a 2-2 draw against Fram. Despite Ingvar’s absence from the field, Víkingar announced earlier this year that they would stand by him and provide close support after his diagnosis.

Víkingur (Knattspyrnufélagið Víkingur) is a football club located in the Fossvogur neighbourhood of Reykjavík, Iceland. Founded in 1908, Víkingar began as a football club and today hosts divisions in multiple sports. Its men’s football team competes in Iceland’s top-tier league and has secured several national titles. The club plays its home matches at Víkingsvöllur (often called Víkin) in Fossvogur. Víkingsvöllur has been its main stadium since 2005.
