A man suspected of rape has been remanded in custody in Iceland, with the Court of Appeal (Landsréttur) confirming the remand order until 16 November, according to reports by RÚV, Vísir, and mbl.is. The man was taken into custody to prevent him from fleeing the country.
The suspect had been living in Iceland under a false name and was staying in the country illegally, court records show. He was arrested on arrival at Keflavík Airport on 18 October after having been sought by authorities since January. His identity was confirmed when his fingerprints matched records at the airport, leading to his arrest according to DV.
According to court records cited by RÚV and Vísir, the man admitted to the alleged rape. The District Prosecutor (Héraðssaksóknari) stated charges were brought in November of last year, and the indictment alleges the man committed rape.
While most reports state that the remand lasts until 16 November, one outlet, DV, reported that the custody period ends on 19 October. This discrepancy in the end date of the remand order has not yet been clarified.
