A new company named Sturlungar has been founded in Akureyri, in northern Iceland, by Páll Steingrímsson and Yngveldi Myrra Sturludóttir, according to reports from Mannlíf. The company is registered at an address in Akureyri, which is the largest town outside Iceland’s capital area and often referred to as the Capital of North Iceland, making it a key base for tourism.

Sturlungar’s stated purpose is to operate whale-watching tours and provide other services for tourists. Whale-watching has become a notable activity for visitors to Iceland, with Akureyri’s location on the head of Eyjafjörður providing access to waters frequented by whales.

Mannlíf also reports that Páll Steingrímsson is serving on the company’s board. No information has been disclosed about when Sturlungar will begin operations or what additional tourist services may be offered.

Background

Akureyri, located by the head of Eyjafjörður in northern Iceland, is the fifth most populous municipality in the country and the largest outside the Capital Region. The town includes the islands Hrísey and Grímsey and has been settled since the 9th century, receiving its municipal charter in 1786. Over time, Akureyri has become a significant port and fishing centre for the region.
