Icelandic businesses can only prevent Meta scraping by cancelling accounts

Icelandic businesses that use Meta business accounts to manage their Facebook and Instagram pages can stop Meta from scraping content on their company websites for AI purposes only by cancelling their Meta business accounts altogether. This report was first covered by RÚV English on Wednesday.

Meta is the US-based technology company that owns both Facebook and Instagram. The company recently introduced new terms that require business users to cancel their accounts if they wish to opt out of Meta gathering data from their websites for use in artificial intelligence training.

The editor of Sýn’s newsroom, Iceland’s largest mass media company as of 2022, described Meta’s approach as “strange and concerning,” according to RÚV English. Sýn is listed on the Icelandic stock exchange and rebroadcasts foreign television channels on digital TV systems including IPTV and DVB-T2.
