Rain and showers are sweeping across Iceland today, accompanied by brisk winds, according to a forecast first reported by RÚV. The country’s meteorologists expect the wet and windy weather to affect most regions before more severe conditions develop tomorrow.

Southerly winds between 5 and 13 metres per second, along with showers, are forecast for the south and west of Iceland today. In North and East Iceland, southeasterly and easterly winds of 10 to 18 metres per second and rain are expected until around midday, after which the weather should ease and begin to clear.

Last night, weather fronts moved over the country, bringing strong winds, storm conditions and rain. Although today is comparatively calm, meteorologists are urging people to prepare for a deep and tight low pressure system expected to arrive tomorrow, with yellow and orange weather warnings already issued for much of Iceland.

Raincoats are recommended as conditions may become quite wet in many areas today, according to advice from the Icelandic Met Office.
