A licence granted to Kaldvík to operate a sea-cage salmon farm in Seyðisfjörður, in East Iceland, has been formally appealed to the Environment and Natural Resources Appeals Committee. The case has drawn public attention, with 13,000 signatures delivered to the government urging action. The news was first reported by mbl.is and RÚV.
The appeal against the licence was submitted by Vá, félag um vernd fjarðar, an organisation focused on protecting the fjord. According to RÚV, a lawyer for the organisation argued that the potential danger of accidental escapes of farmed salmon, which could occur as a result of mudslides in the fjord, has not been adequately investigated.
Jóhann Páll Jóhannsson received the petition of 13,000 signatures on behalf of the government and stated he will present it at a cabinet meeting scheduled for tomorrow. Referring to the petition, Jóhannsson said, “When 13,000 signatures arrive and such a decisive demand from a large group of people, it is natural for the authorities to listen,” according to mbl.is.
