The northern coastal town of Siglufjörður was struck by a severe storm on Wednesday, causing substantial property damage, according to reports from Vísir and mbl.is, as first reported by Kaffið.
Local authorities say it is not yet possible to estimate the total amount of damage after the storm. Among the destruction were roofs ripped from buildings and other property losses, Jóhann K. Jóhannsson, the fire chief of Fjallabyggð, told Trölli and mbl.is.
Jóhann described the force of the winds in the town: “The roofs go airborne, fall down and shatter,” he said, according to a translation of his remarks to Vísir.
Measurements from the Icelandic Coast Guard vessel Freyja registered the strongest gust at 56 meters per second during the storm. In response to the event, Jóhann said it is timely to install a wind meter in downtown Siglufjörður.
