Iceland’s Meteorological Office has issued a series of weather warnings across the country for the weekend, forecasting widespread hazardous winds and difficult travel conditions, Vísir reports.

Yellow weather warnings, a signal of potentially hazardous conditions, will be in force for the entire country on Sunday, with yellow and orange warnings already in effect for many areas on Saturday. An orange warning, the second-highest level, has been declared for the Breiðafjörður region on Saturday afternoon and evening, but the Meteorological Office has not provided a detailed list of which towns or roads are most affected within this area.

Gusts on the Snæfellsnes peninsula could exceed 40 metres per second, creating risks for vehicles and increasing the possibility of wind damage. A warning also applies to the capital area from 15:00 to 20:00 on Saturday. In western Iceland, a yellow warning begins at 11:00, with an orange warning specifically for Breiðafjörður between 16:00 and 20:00, though there are minor differences in reported times across sources.

Regional impacts and ongoing alerts

Weather warnings are not limited to the west and southwest. The east, including Austurland and the Eastfjords, will fall under a yellow warning from 15:00 on Sunday until 01:00 on Monday. Yellow warnings are also in effect for Strandir and Norðurland vestra (northwest Iceland), with particularly strong winds expected in Fljótum at the end of Saturday.

The cause of the current unsettled weather is a deep, wide low-pressure system near southern Greenland, according to the Icelandic Met Office.
