Reykjavík Metropolitan Police are investigating the sale of falsified electronic identity credentials to underage youths, according to mbl.is and several Icelandic news outlets. Authorities have arrested one person in connection with the case, but it is not yet known whether any formal charges have been filed.
Police suspect the arrested individual of selling fake electronic credentials to hundreds of young people. Some news sources describe the number of affected youths as ‘hundreds,’ while others specify ‘more than 300,’ though an exact figure has not yet been confirmed. The credentials were reportedly sold through a website or an iPhone application designed for Apple devices.
Police warn about VPN risk for young users
Authorities have warned parents about a virtual private network (VPN) setting identified as ‘Island Surge VPN.’ Police say this VPN, which over 300 young people are reported to have installed, could allow unknown parties to read and modify all network traffic to and from the affected phones.
